Ant.

Invitatory {Antiphon from the Psalter for the season of the Church year}
Ant. The Lord is risen indeed. * Alleluia.
Ant. The Lord is risen indeed. * Alleluia.
Come let us praise the Lord with joy: let us joyfully sing to God our saviour. Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving; and make a joyful noise to him with psalms.
Ant. The Lord is risen indeed. * Alleluia.
For the Lord is a great God, and a great King above all gods. For the Lord will not cast off his people: for in his hand are all the ends of the earth, and the heights of the mountains are his.
Ant. Alleluia.
For the sea is his, and he made it: and his hands formed the dry land. (genuflect) Come let us adore and fall down: and weep before the Lord that made us: For he is the Lord our God: and we are the people of his pasture and the sheep of his hand.
Ant. The Lord is risen indeed. * Alleluia.
Today if you shall hear his voice, harden not your hearts: As in the provocation, according to the day of temptation in the wilderness: where your fathers tempted me, they proved me, and saw my works.
Ant. Alleluia.
Forty years long was I offended with that generation, and I said: These always err in heart. And these men have not known my ways: so I swore in my wrath that they shall not enter into my rest.
Ant. The Lord is risen indeed. * Alleluia.
℣. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost.
℟. As it was in the beginning, is now, * and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
Ant. Alleluia.

Hymn {from the Psalter for the season of the Church year}
O thou, the heavens' eternal King,
Creator, unto thee we sing,
With God the Father ever One,
Co-equal, co-eternal Son.

Thy hand, when first the world began,
Made in thine own pure image man,
And linked to Adam, sprung from earth,
A living soul of heavenly birth.

And when by craft the envious foe
Had marred thy noblest work below,
Clothed in our flesh, thou didst restore
The image thou hadst made before.

Once wast thou born of Mary's womb;
And now, new-born from out the tomb,
O Christ, thou bidd'st us rise with thee
From death to immortality.

Eternal Shepherd, thou dost lave
Thy flock in pure baptismal wave,
That mystic bath, that grave of sin,
Where ransomed souls new life begin.

Redeemer, thou for us didst deign
To hang upon the Cross of pain,
And give for us the lavish price
Of thine own blood in sacrifice.

Grant, Lord, in thee each faithful mind
Unceasing paschal joy may find;
And from the death of sin set free
Souls newly born to life by thee.

To thee, once dead, who now dost live,
All glory, Lord, thy people give,
Whom, with the Father, we adore,
And Holy Ghost forevermore.
Amen.

Psalmus 61 [1]

61:4 Quoúsque irrúitis in hóminem?

Nocturn I.
Ant. Alleluia, * alleluia, alleluia.
Psalm 61 [1]
61:2 Shall not my soul be subject to God? * for from him is my salvation.
61:3 For he is my God and my saviour: * he is my protector, I shall be moved no more.
61:4 How long do you rush in upon a man? * you all kill, as if you were thrusting down a leaning wall, and a tottering fence.
61:5 But they have thought to cast away my price; I ran in thirst: * they blessed with their mouth, but cursed with their heart.
61:6 But be thou, O my soul, subject to God: * for from him is my patience.
61:7 For he is my God and my saviour: * he is my helper, I shall not be moved.
61:8 In God is my salvation and my glory: * he is the God of my help, and my hope is in God.
61:9 Trust in him, all ye congregation of people: pour out your hearts before him. * God is our helper for ever.
61:10 But vain are the sons of men, the sons of men are liars in the balances: * that by vanity they may together deceive.
61:11 Trust not in iniquity, and cover not robberies: * if riches abound, set not your heart upon them.
61:12 God hath spoken once, these two things have I heard, that power belongeth to God, and mercy to thee, O Lord; * for thou wilt render to every man according to his works.
℣. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost.
℟. As it was in the beginning, is now, * and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

65:11 Induxísti nos in láqueum, posuísti tribulatiónes in dorso nostro: * imposuísti hómines super cápita nostra.

65:4 Let all the earth adore thee, * and sing to thee: let it sing a psalm to thy name.
65:5 Come and see the works of God; * who is terrible in his counsels over the sons of men.
65:6 Who turneth the sea into dry land, in the river they shall pass on foot: * there shall we rejoice in him.

65:9 Who hath set my soul to live: * and hath not suffered my feet to be moved:
65:10 For thou, O God, hast proved us: * thou hast tried us by fire, as silver is tried.

65:20 Benedíctus Deus, * qui non amóvit oratiónem meam, et misericórdiam suam a me.
℣. Glória Patri, et Fílio, * et Spirítui Sancto.

Psalm 65(13-20) [3]
65:13 I will go into thy house with burnt offerings: * I will pay thee my vows, which my lips have uttered,

65:15 I will offer up to thee holocausts full of marrow, with burnt offerings of rams: * I will offer to thee bullocks with goats.
65:16 Come and hear, all ye that fear God, * and I will tell you what great things he hath done for my soul.
65:17 I cried to him with my mouth: * and I extolled him with my tongue.

68:5 My enemies are grown strong who have wrongfully persecuted me: * then did I pay that which I took not away.
68:6 O God, thou knowest my foolishness; * and my offences are not hidden from thee.
68:7 Let not them be ashamed for me, who look for thee, O Lord, * the Lord of hosts.
68:7 Let them not be confounded on my account, * who seek thee, O God of Israel.
68:8 Because for thy sake I have borne reproach; * shame hath covered my face.
68:9 I am become a stranger to my brethren, * and an alien to the sons of my mother.
68:10 For the zeal of thy house hath eaten me up: * and the reproaches of them that reproached thee are fallen upon me.
68:11 And I covered my soul in fasting: * and it was made a reproach to me.
68:12 And I made haircloth my garment: * and I became a byword to them.
68:13 They that sat in the gate spoke against me: * and they that drank wine made me their song.
68:13 But as for me, my prayer is to thee, O Lord; * for the time of thy good pleasure, O God.
℣. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost.
℟. As it was in the beginning, is now, * and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
Psalmus 68(14-29) [8]
68:14 In multitúdine misericórdiæ tuæ exáudi me, * in veritáte salútis tuæ:
68:15 Éripe me de luto, ut non infígar: * líbera me ab iis, qui odérunt me, et de profúndis aquárum.
68:16 Non me demérgat tempéstas aquæ, neque absórbeat me profúndum: * neque úrgeat super me púteus os suum.
68:17 Exáudi me, Dómine, quóniam benígna est misericórdia tua: * secúndum multitúdinem miseratiónum tuárum réspice in me.
68:18 Et ne avértas fáciem tuam a púero tuo: * quóniam tríbulor, velóciter exáudi me.
68:19 Inténde ánimæ meæ, et líbera eam: * propter inimícos meos éripe me.
℣. Glória Patri, et Fílio, * et Spirítui Sancto.
℟. Sicut erat in princípio, et nunc, et semper, * et in sǽcula sæculórum. Amen.
Psalm 68(14-29) [8]
68:14 In the multitude of thy mercy hear me, * in the truth of thy salvation.
68:15 Draw me out of the mire, that I may not stick fast: * deliver me from them that hate me, and out of the deep waters.
68:16 Let not the tempest of water drown me, nor the deep swallow me up: * and let not the pit shut her mouth upon me.
68:17 Hear me, O Lord, for thy mercy is kind; * look upon me according to the multitude of thy tender mercies.
68:18 And turn not away thy face from thy servant: * for I am in trouble, hear me speedily.
68:19 Attend to my soul, and deliver it: * save me because of my enemies.
68:20 Thou knowest my reproach, and my confusion, * and my shame.
68:21 In thy sight are all they that afflict me; * my heart hath expected reproach and misery.
68:21 And I looked for one that would grieve together with me, * but there was none: and for one that would comfort me, and I found none.
68:22 And they gave me gall for my food, * and in my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink.
68:23 Let their table become as a snare before them, * and a recompense, and a stumblingblock.
68:24 Let their eyes be darkened that they see not; * and their back bend thou down always.
68:25 Pour out thy indignation upon them: * and let thy wrathful anger take hold of them.
68:26 Let their habitation be made desolate: * and let there be none to dwell in their tabernacles.
68:27 Because they have persecuted him whom thou hast smitten; * and they have added to the grief of my wounds.
68:28 Add thou iniquity upon their iniquity: * and let them not come into thy justice.
68:29 Let them be blotted out of the book of the living; * and with the just let them not be written.
℣. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost.
℟. As it was in the beginning, is now, * and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Lesson from the Acts of the Apostles
Acts 24:10-16
10 Then Paul answered, (the governor making a sign to him to speak:) Knowing that for many years thou hast been judge over this nation, I will with good courage answer for myself.
11 For thou mayest understand, that there are yet but twelve days, since I went up to adore in Jerusalem:
12 And neither in the temple did they find me disputing with any man, or causing any concourse of the people, neither in the synagogues, nor in the city:
13 Neither can they prove unto thee the things whereof they now accuse me.
14 But this I confess to thee, that according to the way, which they call a heresy, so do I serve the Father and my God, believing all things which are written in the law and the prophets:
15 Having hope in God, which these also themselves look for, that there shall be a resurrection of the just and unjust.
16 And herein do I endeavour to have always a conscience without offence toward God, and towards men.
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
℟. Thanks be to God.

℟. With great power gave the Apostles
* Witness of the Resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ, alleluia, alleluia.
℣. They were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and they spoke the Word of God with boldness.
℟. Witness of the Resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ, alleluia, alleluia.
℣. Iube, Dómine, benedícere.
Benedictio. Unigénitus Dei Fílius nos benedícere et adiuváre dignétur. Amen.

Acts 24:17-21
17 Now after many years, I came to bring alms to my nation, and offerings, and vows.
18 In which I was found purified in the temple: neither with multitude, nor with tumult.
19 But certain Jews of Asia, who ought to be present before thee, and to accuse, if they had any thing against me:
20 Or let these men themselves say, if they found in me any iniquity, when standing before the council,
21 Except it be for this one voice only that I cried, standing among them, Concerning the resurrection of the dead am I judged this day by you.
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
℟. Thanks be to God.

Acts 24:22-27
22 And Felix put them off, having most certain knowledge of this way, saying: When Lysias the tribune shall come down, I will hear you.
23 And he commanded a centurion to keep him, and that he should be easy, and that he should not prohibit any of his friends to minister unto him.
24 And after some days, Felix, coming with Drusilla his wife, who was a Jew, sent for Paul, and heard of him the faith, that is in Christ Jesus.
25 And as he treated of justice, and chastity, and of the judgment to come, Felix being terrified, answered: For this time, go thy way: but when I have a convenient time, I will send for thee.
26 Hoping also withal, that money should be given him by Paul; for which cause also oftentimes sending for him, he spoke with him.
27 But when two years were ended, Felix had for successor Portius Festus. And Felix being willing to show the Jews a pleasure, left Paul bound.
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
℟. Thanks be to God.

Psalm 89 [2]
89:1 Lord, thou hast been our refuge * from generation to generation.
89:2 Before the mountains were made, or the earth and the world was formed; * from eternity and to eternity thou art God.
89:3 Turn not man away to be brought low: * and thou hast said: Be converted, O ye sons of men.
89:4 For a thousand years in thy sight * are as yesterday, which is past.
89:5 And as a watch in the night, * things that are counted nothing, shall their years be.
89:6 In the morning man shall grow up like grass; in the morning he shall flourish and pass away: * in the evening he shall fall, grow dry, and wither.
89:7 For in thy wrath we have fainted away: * and are troubled in thy indignation.
89:8 Thou hast set our iniquities before thy eyes: * our life in the light of thy countenance.
89:9 For all our days are spent; * and in thy wrath we have fainted away.
89:9 Our years shall be considered as a spider: * the days of our years in them are threescore and ten years.
89:10 But if in the strong they be fourscore years: * and what is more of them is labour and sorrow.
89:10 For mildness is come upon us: * and we shall be corrected.
89:11 Who knoweth the power of thy anger, * and for thy fear can number thy wrath?
89:12 So make thy right hand known: * and men learned in heart, in wisdom.
89:13 Return, O Lord, how long? * and be entreated in favour of thy servants.
89:14 We are filled in the morning with thy mercy: * and we have rejoiced, and are delighted all our days.
89:15 We have rejoiced for the days in which thou hast humbled us: * for the years in which we have seen evils.
89:16 Look upon thy servants and upon their works: * and direct their children.
89:17 And let the brightness of the Lord our God be upon us: and direct thou the works of our hands over us; * yea, the work of our hands do thou direct.
℣. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost.
℟. As it was in the beginning, is now, * and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
Psalmus 35 [3]
℣. Glória Patri, et Fílio, * et Spirítui Sancto.
℟. Sicut erat in princípio, et nunc, et semper, * et in sǽcula sæculórum. Amen.
Psalm 35 [3]
35:2 The unjust hath said within himself, that he would sin: * there is no fear of God before his eyes.
35:3 For in his sight he hath done deceitfully, * that his iniquity may be found unto hatred.
35:4 The words of his mouth are iniquity and guile: * he would not understand that he might do well.
35:5 He hath devised iniquity on his bed, * he hath set himself on every way that is not good: but evil he hath not hated.
35:6 O Lord, thy mercy is in heaven, * and thy truth reacheth even to the clouds.
35:7 Thy justice is as the mountains of God, * thy judgments are a great deep.
35:7 Men and beasts thou wilt preserve, O Lord: * O how hast thou multiplied thy mercy, O God!
35:8 But the children of men * shall put their trust under the covert of thy wings.
35:9 They shall be inebriated with the plenty of thy house; * and thou shalt make them drink of the torrent of thy pleasure.
35:10 For with thee is the fountain of life; * and in thy light we shall see light.
35:11 Extend thy mercy to them that know thee, * and thy justice to them that are right in heart.
35:12 Let not the foot of pride come to me, * and let not the hand of the sinner move me.
35:13 There the workers of iniquity are fallen, * they are cast out, and could not stand.
℣. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost.
℟. As it was in the beginning, is now, * and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

31:12 For the Lord hath redeemed Jacob, * and delivered him out of the hand of one that was mightier than he.
31:13 And they shall come, and shall give praise in mount Sion: * and they shall flow together to the good things of the Lord,
31:14 For the corn, and wine, and oil, * and the increase of cattle and herds,
31:15 And their soul shall be as a watered garden, * and they shall be hungry no more.
31:16 Then shall the virgin rejoice in the dance, * the young men and old men together:
31:17 And I will turn their mourning into joy, * and will comfort them, and make them joyful after their sorrow.
31:18 And I will fill the soul of the priests with fatness: * and my people shall be filled with my good things.

Capitulum Hymnus Versus {ex Psalterio secundum diem}
Rom 6:9-10
℟. Deo grátias.

Hymnus
Auróra cælum púrpurat,
Æther resúltat láudibus,
Mundus triúmphans iúbilat,
Horrens avérnus ínfremit:

Rex ille dum fortíssimus
De mortis inférno specu
Patrum senátum líberum
Edúcit ad vitæ iubar.

Cuius sepúlcrum plúrimo
Custóde signábat lapis,
Victor triúmphat, et suo
Mortem sepúlcro fúnerat.

Sat fúneri, sat lácrimis,
Sat est datum dolóribus:
Surréxit exstínctor necis,
Clamat corúscans Ángelus.

Ut sis perénne méntibus
Paschále, Iesu, gáudium,
A morte dira críminum
Vitæ renátos líbera.

Deo Patri sit glória,
Et Fílio, qui a mórtuis
Surréxit, ac Paráclito,
In sempitérna sǽcula.
Amen.

℣. In resurrectióne tua, Christe, allelúia.
℟. Cæli et terra læténtur, allelúia.
Chapter Hymn Verse {from the Psalter for the day of the week}
Rom 6:9-10
Knowing that Christ rising again from the dead, dieth now no more, death shall no more have dominion over him. For in that he died to sin, he died once; but in that he liveth, he liveth unto God.
℟. Thanks be to God.

Hymn
The morn had spread her crimson rays,
When rang the skies with shouts of praise;
Earth joined the joyful hymn to swell,
That brought despair to vanquished hell.

He comes victorious from the grave,
The Lord omnipotent to save,
And brings with him to light of day
The saints who long imprisoned lay.

Vain is the cavern’s three-fold ward —
The stone, the seal, the armed guard;
O death, no more thine arm we fear,
The Victor’s tomb is now thy bier.

Let hymns of joy to grief succeed,
We know that Christ is risen indeed;
We hear his white-robed angel’s voice,
And in our risen Lord rejoice.

With Christ we died, with Christ we rose,
When at the font his name we chose;
Oh, let not sin our robes defile,
And turn to grief the paschal smile.

To God the Father let us sing,
To God the Son, our risen King,
And equally let us adore
The Spirit, God forevermore.
Amen.

℣. Christ, in thy resurrection, alleluia.
℟. Let heaven and earth rejoice, alleluia.

Iam lucis orto sídere,

Hymn
Now in the sun's new dawning ray,
Lowly of heart, our God we pray
That he from harm may keep us free
In all the deeds this day shall see.

May fear of him our tongues restrain,
Lest strife unguarded speech should stain:
His favouring care our guardian be,
Lest our eyes feed on vanity.

May every heart be pure from sin
And folly find no place therein:
Scant need of food, excess denied,
Wear down in us the body's pride.

That when the light of day is gone,
And night in course shall follow on.
We, free from cares the world affords,
May chant the praise that is our Lord's.

All laud to God the Father be,
All praise, Eternal Son, to thee:
All glory, as is ever meet,
To God the holy Paraclete.
Amen.

Psalm 73(1-9) [1]
73:1 O God, why hast thou cast us off unto the end: * why is thy wrath enkindled against the sheep of thy pasture?
73:2 Remember thy congregation, * which thou hast possessed from the beginning.
73:2 The sceptre of thy inheritance which thou hast redeemed: * mount Sion in which thou hast dwelt.
73:3 Lift up thy hands against their pride unto the end; * see what things the enemy hath done wickedly in the sanctuary.
73:4 And they that hate thee have made their boasts, * in the midst of thy solemnity.
73:5 They have set up their ensigns for signs, * and they knew not both in the going out and on the highest top.
73:6 As with axes in a wood of trees, they have cut down at once the gates thereof, * with axe and hatchet they have brought it down.
73:7 They have set fire to thy sanctuary: * they have defiled the dwelling place of thy name on the earth.
73:8 They said in their heart, the whole kindred of them together: * Let us abolish all the festival days of God from the land.
73:9 Our signs we have not seen, there is now no prophet: * and he will know us no more.

73:11 Why dost thou turn away thy hand: and thy right hand * out of the midst of thy bosom for ever?
73:12 But God is our king before ages: * he hath wrought salvation in the midst of the earth.
73:13 Thou by thy strength didst make the sea firm: * thou didst crush the heads of the dragons in the waters.
73:14 Thou hast broken the heads of the dragon: * thou hast given him to be meat for the people of the Ethiopians.
73:15 Thou hast broken up the fountains and the torrents: * thou hast dried up the Ethan rivers.

O strength and stay upholding all creation,
Who ever dost thyself unmoved abide,
Yet day by day the light in due gradation
From hour to hour through all its changes guide:

Grant to life’s day a calm unclouded ending,
An eve untouched by shadows of decay,
The brightness of a holy death-bed blending
With dawning glories of th’ eternal day.

Hear us, O Father, gracious and forgiving,
And thou, O Christ, the co-eternal Word,
Who, with the Holy Ghost, by all things living
Now and to endless ages art adored.

Chapter Hymn Verse {from the Psalter for the day of the week}
Rom 6:9-10
Knowing that Christ rising again from the dead, dieth now no more, death shall no more have dominion over him. For in that he died to sin, he died once; but in that he liveth, he liveth unto God.
℟. Thanks be to God.

Hymn
At the Lamb’s high feast we sing
Praise to our victorious King,
Who hath washed us in the tide
Flowing from his piercèd side.

Praise we him whose love divine
Gives the guests his blood for wine,
Gives his body for the feast,
Love the victim, love the priest.

Where the paschal blood is poured,
Death’s dark angel sheathes his sword;
Israel’s hosts triumphant go
Through the wave that drowns the foe.

Christ, the Lamb whose blood was shed,
Paschal victim, paschal bread;
With sincerity and love
Eat we manna from above.

Mighty victim from the sky,
Powers of hell beneath thee lie;
Death is conquered in the fight;
Thou hast brought us life and light.

Now thy banner thou dost wave;
Vanquished Satan and the grave;
Angels join his praise to tell —
See o’erthrown the prince of hell.

Paschal triumph, paschal joy,
Only sin can this destroy;
From the death of sin set free,
Souls re-born, dear Lord, in Thee.

Hymns of glory, songs of praise,
Father, unto thee we raise;
Risen Lord, all praise to thee,
Ever with the Spirit be.
Amen.

℣. Stay with us, O Lord, alleluia.
℟. Because it is towards evening, alleluia.

Procul recédant sómnia,
Et nóctium phantásmata;
Hostémque nóstrum cómprime,
Ne polluántur córpora.

Præsta, Pater piíssime,
Patríque compar Únice,
Cum Spíritu Paráclito
Regnans per omne sǽculum.
Amen.
Hymn
Before the ending of the day,
Creator of the world, we pray
That with thy wonted favor thou
Wouldst be our guard and keeper now.

From all ill dreams defend our eyes,
From nightly fears and fantasies;
Tread under foot our ghostly foe,
That no pollution we may know.

O Father, that we ask be done,
Through Jesus Christ, thine only Son;
Who, with the Holy Ghost and thee,
Doth live and reign eternally.
Amen.
